On 11/29/80, I was 16 years old and a Junior in high school living in Jacksonville, FL about 75 miles from Gainesville. I had never heard of the Grateful Dead so this show was completely off of my radar. I had just seen AC/DC Back in Black Tour and was getting ready for Rossington-Collins Band in Jax on Jan. 3, 1981...growing up in Jax, it was all about Lynyrd Skynyrd and southern rock. This show is at the top of my "shoulda woulda coulda" been at Grateful Dead shows from the early-mid 1980s. The first set is chock full of well played material of that era, and the Shakedown>Franklin's 2nd set opener is a jammed out, one of a kind segue sequence spectacular!
This show and this source have long been one of my all-time favorite audience recordings. My only question is, how far apart were the mics because the mix is perfect?!
My compliments to Bob Wagner, Jim Wise, Charlie Miller and anyone else involved with this incredible FOB sweet spot sensation! I also must tip my cap to the Oade Brothers from Thomasville, GA and their contributions to taping technological advances.
From a latter day Grateful taper to the pioneers of taping, thank you gentlemen for creating near perfection with this gem! Go Seminoles!
